Dear Founder: A Value Investor’s Open Letter to the Next 1,000 NFT Projects

Building Sustainable Ventures in a Hype-Driven Landscape

As the NFT market booms, it is essential for founders to shift focus from fleeting hype to sustainable value creation. This letter outlines the critical financial foundations and operational strategies needed for lasting success.

Financial Fundamentals Plus Art

Before I even glance at the art, I want to see the financial documents which are the very skeleton of your venture if you want me to invest in your project. You want to promote the art and vision to collectors but you also want my money.  These should clearly outline:

  • Projected Cash Flow Statements: How do you expect to generate revenue? What are the expected earnings, and how will you manage costs?  Are there any related ancillary projects that can provide real and predictable cash flow?
  • Profit and Loss Statements: I want to know the trajectory of your intake versus your outlay. Are you scrutinizing expenses? Are you prepared for the market's inevitable downturns?
  • Balance Sheets: Let’s gauge your financial health. Are your assets like RWA really backing your claims, or are we clutching at digital straws?

Tokenomics That Don’t Scream “Team Exit in 18 Months”

Tokenomics must be designed with foresight and sustainability in mind. Too often, I witness structures that scream “get-rich-quick scheme,” facilitating short-term gains at the expense of long-term viability. Take heed, dear founders: true success lies in creating an economic moat: something that keeps competitors at bay and ensures your revenue streams remain robust. Protect against the specter of exit strategies that only benefit the team while leaving holders in the dust.  Don't just offer staking rewards that expand your token supply and call it token utility.

Roadmaps Are Fiction—Here’s How to Fix Them

How many NFT projects fail to deliver on their roadmaps? Many fall into the trap of promising features like a crystal ball in a carnival which are wonderful to behold but utterly lacking in substance. To combat this:

  • Set Achievable Milestones: Instead of vague promises, set specific, measurable objectives that showcase progress. Break down your journey into tangible steps.
  • Be Transparent: Regularly update your community with achievements and challenges alike; build trust through accountability.

The Brutal Math of Customer Acquisition Cost vs. Lifetime Value

Let’s talk numbers. Understanding the brutal math of customer acquisition cost (CAC) versus lifetime value (LTV) in Web3 is essential. If you can acquire users cheaply but they don’t stick around or generate lasting value, your business is sailing toward a storm. Always aim for an LTV that significantly exceeds your CAC; this will lay the groundwork for a sustainable enterprise.

One Honest Piece of Advice

Here’s a nugget of wisdom: focus on delivering genuine value rather than sensational hype. While the lure of exponential growth through rapid token sales or a mint out is intoxicating, a foundation built on solid use cases, real-world utility, and honest engagement will protect not only your reputation but also your community. Too many teams find themselves rug-pulling their own reputations in pursuit of momentary fame, ultimately leaving themselves abandoned and ostracized.

In Conclusion

As you embark on this exciting venture, remember that the world is watching. The excitement surrounding NFTs and tokens must give way to genuine complexity and utility, lest your creation be relegated to the overflowing back shelves of digital history.

So I implore you, founders, please create something lasting. Build a venture that can pay the bills, sustain cash flows, and provide real value, both artistic and financial, even in uncertain times. In the end, intrinsic value, not hype, will determine your legacy.

With cautious optimism,
