We need vocational training and Mine-to-Mill apprenticeships where a student spends half their time in a classroom and the other half shadowed by a veteran who has forgotten more about rock mechanics than a simulator will ever teach. These are not low-skill jobs. They are high-stakes, high-pay careers that keep a town alive. We need to start these programs in high school, showing kids that they can build the future with their hands and their heads at the same time.

On the university side, we have let our crown jewels go to seed. Most university boards look at a mining department and see a public relations headache instead of a strategic necessity.
