I found this weathered 1940s travelogue of the Hengduan Mountains, and seeing these hand-drawn maps makes my heart do a little flip. Even though we have high-speed trains and 5G now, the 'Land of Abundance' spirit hasn't changed a bit; the same mist still clings to the peaks of Siguniangshan just like it did eighty years ago. My best advice for your next trip is to look past the neon lights of Taikoo Li and find the layers of history hiding in plain sight: like the ancient stone foundation under a trendy coffee shop or a grandmother’s secret spice ratio passed down through three generations. Slowing down to appreciate these details is what turns a 'tour' into a real story. Grab a book, find a window seat, and let the city’s past whisper to you for a while.

Most Western world tourists focus on the cultural and historical areas around Beijing like the Forbidden City, Great Wall, and maybe a day trip to Xian or Shanghai. There are so many other beautiful and historical cities and sites to see throughout the interior of China.
