Scarlet pimpernel · Change (Greenaway, 1884, listed as Pimpernel)
The story of the card

The Garden Wheel of Fortune is a great golden wheel turning among violet clouds. A sphinx sits calmly at the top, wisdom that stays balanced through change, while a serpent descends on one side and a jackal-headed figure rises on the other: letting go and renewal as parts of the same motion. The letters TARO and ROTA circle the rim, the wheel and the word turning back on themselves. In the corners four winged creatures read their books, the fixed signs that hold steady within change. Scarlet pimpernels, Greenaway's flower of change, ring the wheel. The picture asks you: which part of the turn are you in, and how can you move with it?

The full reading

Upright

The Wheel of Fortune is the card of cycles and turning points. Number ten completes the first decade of the majors and begins again at a higher turn, and Jupiter, its planet, brings expansion, opportunity and a generous sense of timing. When it appears, circumstances are shifting, sometimes suddenly, and a new chapter may be opening. In real life it can describe a lucky break, an unexpected meeting, a change of role or home, or the moment a long pattern finally shifts. At work it favours adaptability, noticing openings and acting when the timing is right. In love it speaks of turning points, chance encounters or a relationship entering a new phase. Inwardly it invites you to notice the patterns that repeat in your life and the choices that could shift them. Its gift is perspective: everything moves. Its shadow, when overdone, is passivity, waiting for luck to decide. Stay open, notice the turn, and move with it.

Reversed

Reversed, the Wheel of Fortune shows a cycle that feels stuck or seems to turn against you. Plans may be delayed, doors may close unexpectedly, or you may notice the same situation returning in a new costume. Often the energy is held back by resistance: clinging to how things were, or waiting for circumstances to change on their own. At other times it is internalised as a sense that nothing you do matters, which can make you give up just before the turn. At work this can look like setbacks, bad timing or a role that keeps repeating the same frustrations. In love it may point to old patterns resurfacing, or a relationship caught in a loop. Inwardly it asks what lesson keeps returning because it has not yet been learned. The way through is to take hold of the part you can influence. Name the pattern, change one habit that feeds it, and trust that wheels keep turning, including this one.
