Wallflower · Greenaway 1884: Wall-flower, "Fidelity in adversity."
The story of the card

In the Garden card two travellers in cool blue glass make their way through falling snow. One leans on a crutch, the other pulls a thin cloak close, and above them a stained-glass window glows with five gold pentacles. Golden wallflowers grow straight out of the cold stone wall. A teacher would ask you to notice what the travellers miss: they are walking past the light. The snow names a hard season, the crutch a need for support, the pair a struggle shared. The wallflower, Greenaway’s flower of fidelity in adversity, blooms anyway. The picture asks you to lift your eyes and look for the lit window.

The full reading

Upright

The Five of Pentacles is the Lord of Material Trouble, Mercury in Taurus: the unsettled mind meeting a need for security that is not being met. It describes a season when you feel out in the cold, whether through a practical setback, a sense of exclusion, a loss of footing at work, or loneliness inside a relationship. Much of its weight comes from how isolating hardship can feel. Often the worry is loudest in the mind, telling you that you are on your own and that asking for help is impossible. In love the card can show two people going through a difficult stretch side by side, and loyalty that deepens under strain. Its hidden gift is solidarity: the discovery of who walks with you. Its shadow is pride or shame that keeps you outside the door. The card asks you to name what you need, reach toward trusted people or qualified support, and let yourself step into the warmth.

Reversed

Reversed, the Five of Pentacles often marks the turn of the season. The snow may still be falling, yet you are beginning to notice the lit window, accept a hand or find your footing again. When the energy is blocked, the hardship may have eased outwardly while the inner sense of scarcity lingers, so you keep bracing for cold that has already passed. When it is internalised, you may be struggling quietly and presenting a composed face to the world, too proud or too tired to ask. In work this can show as a slow rebuilding after a setback; in relationships, as reconnection after a lonely stretch. The way through is gentle and practical. Let one person know what is really happening, accept the help that is offered, and seek qualified guidance for any concrete decisions. Warmth tends to return in small steps, and each one you accept makes the next easier to see.
