The story of the card
In the Garden deck a winged herald leans from bright clouds and sounds a golden trumpet, a flag marked with an equal-armed red cross hanging from it, the meeting of opposites in balance. Below, stylised figures rise from a shimmering sea, arms open, faces lifted toward the sound, as if they had been waiting for exactly this note. Mountains stand in the distance, the challenges already crossed. Around the arch, the bells of lily of the valley echo the trumpet's shape; Greenaway gave them the meaning 'return of happiness'. Water washes, the call wakes, and everyone answers in their own way. The picture asks what is calling you now, and whether you are ready to rise.
The full reading
Upright
Judgement is the card of awakening and the honest review that comes before a new stage. Traditionally linked to the element of Fire, and in modern practice to Pluto, it describes a moment when you look back over your path with clear eyes, forgive what needs forgiving, including yourself, and hear a call toward what comes next. In work, this may be a vocation clarifying, a decision to change direction after long reflection, or recognition that a chapter has prepared you for something larger. In love, it can mean a relationship renewed through honest reckoning, or a clear decision about what you truly want. In the inner life, it is the sense of being summoned by your own deeper purpose, a knowing that is hard to ignore once heard. Its gift is renewal with integrity: you rise carrying the lessons and leaving the old burdens behind. Overdone, this energy turns into harsh judgement of yourself or others. The card asks you to listen, take stock kindly, and answer the call.
Reversed
Reversed, Judgement suggests a call that is heard and not yet answered. You may sense that a new stage is waiting and still hesitate, held back by self-doubt, fear of being seen, or a loud inner critic that insists you are not ready. Sometimes the reversal points to a review that has turned into rumination: going over old choices again and again, finding fault without drawing lessons, and so staying stuck in the verdict. It can also describe a reluctance to forgive, yourself or someone else, that keeps the past louder than the present. In work, a new direction may be forming while you keep postponing the first step. In love, old hurts may still be shaping how you respond. The way through is to soften the judgement and keep the lesson. Write down what the past taught you, release the rest, and take one small action toward what is calling you. You do not need to be flawless to begin.
