Sunflower · Adoration (Greenaway, 1884, listed as Sunflower, Dwarf)
The story of the card

In the Garden deck a radiant golden sun with a gentle face fills the sky above a garden wall lined with tall sunflowers. The flowers turn their faces toward it, as Greenaway's emblem of adoration should. In front of the wall a joyful child in a simple garment rides a white horse bareback, arms flung wide, a red banner streaming behind. There is no saddle and no reins; the child trusts the horse, and the horse carries the child with ease. The wall behind marks a garden safely completed. Everything in the picture is lit from the same source. The card asks you to step into the light and let yourself be glad.

Upright

The Sun is the brightest card in the deck, the card of joy, vitality and clear sight. Linked with the Sun itself and the element of Fire, it describes a time when things make sense, energy is available and you can see what is working. In work, it often shows success, recognition, or the simple satisfaction of doing something you are good at in full view. In love, it speaks of warmth, openness and the ease of being truly yourself with someone. In the inner life, it is the return of confidence and play, a reconnection with the child who once did things for the pure pleasure of it. Its gift is radiance: a genuine gladness that spreads to the people around you. Overdone, Sun energy can become overconfidence, a need to be the centre of attention, or a brightness that glosses over what still needs care. The card asks you to celebrate honestly, share your warmth generously, and let your natural light show without apology.

Reversed

Reversed, the Sun is still the Sun; its light is simply partly hidden. Joy may feel delayed, or you may be tired, low in energy, or unable to enjoy what is going well because you are waiting for the next problem. Sometimes the reversal points to a dimmed inner light, where self-doubt keeps you from taking up space or celebrating an achievement that is genuinely yours. At other times it shows the opposite: overconfidence, forced cheerfulness, or optimism used to avoid a harder conversation. In work, success may be arriving more slowly than hoped, and recognition may need to be asked for. In love, a small misunderstanding may have cooled the warmth for a while. The way through is to go looking for the light in simple, physical ways. Get outside, move your body, spend time with people who make you laugh, and do one thing purely for the joy of it. Notice what is already going well, and let yourself feel it.
