Laurel · Greenaway 1884: "Glory."
The story of the card

A rider in ruby glass sits tall on a white horse, a wreath of gilded laurel on his brow and a second wreath bound to the head of his staff. Around him people on foot raise their own staffs, so the triumph is shared and seen. Laurel was the Victorian emblem of glory, and here it glows inside the gold arch like a halo of achievement. The horse is calm and the pace is a procession, which tells you the struggle of the Five is behind him. Notice that the crowd carries staffs as well; others helped him win. The picture asks you to accept recognition with grace and to remember who walked beside you.

The full reading

Upright

The Six of Wands is the card of public success. After the jostling of the Five, one effort rises above the rest and is acknowledged. Jupiter in Leo is generous and expansive, and it loves to be seen. The card can describe a promotion, a win, positive feedback, a launch that lands well, a good review or simply the confidence that comes when others believe in you. In love it may point to pride in a partner, a relationship celebrated openly, or the feeling of being admired. Inwardly it is the steadying of self-belief after a period of effort. Its gift is momentum: recognition opens doors, attracts allies and lets you lead with greater ease. Its shadow, when overdone, is dependence on applause, a need to keep winning to feel worthy, or a success that forgets the people who carried staffs alongside you. The card asks you to receive praise without shrinking or inflating, to thank those who helped, and to use the moment to set your next direction.

Reversed

Reversed, the Six of Wands shows recognition that is delayed, private or uncomfortable. You may have achieved something real and still feel unseen, or you may be waiting for approval before allowing yourself to feel proud. Sometimes the energy has turned inward in a healthy way: a quiet victory that matters more to you than any audience. Sometimes it has become excessive, with ego or a fear of falling from favour making every setback feel personal. At work this can look like credit going to someone else, a launch that underwhelms, or a fear of visibility that keeps you from putting your name on good work. In relationships it might be an imbalance of admiration, or a need for reassurance that strains the bond. The way through is to separate your worth from the volume of the crowd. Name your achievement to yourself, ask for fair credit where it is due, and let steady confidence grow from what you know you did.

In a reading
In the past
A recent success, promotion or public acknowledgement built the confidence and reputation you are now drawing on.Reversed An earlier effort that went unrecognised, or a fall from favour, still affects how willing you are to be seen.
In the present
You are in a moment of visible progress and recognition, and others are ready to follow your lead.Reversed Your achievement is real, yet recognition feels delayed or private, and you may be waiting for approval to feel proud.
Looking ahead

As advice
Step forward and let your success be seen, then share credit generously with those who helped you arrive.Reversed Stop waiting for applause, name your achievement to yourself, and ask clearly for the credit that is fairly yours.
As a challenge
Enjoying the spotlight too much may tempt you to rest on praise or lose touch with those who supported you.Reversed Self-doubt or a need for outside approval is preventing you from owning what you have genuinely achieved.
As the direction
If you continue on this path, you are likely to reach a clear success and the recognition that confirms it.Reversed If nothing changes, you may succeed without feeling it, so learn to recognise your progress without waiting for others.
