Crown imperial · Greenaway 1884: "Majesty. Power."
The story of the card

The king sits on a throne of flame and gold glass carved with salamanders and lions, a sprouting staff in his hand. On either side blaze orange crown imperial fritillaries, the Victorian flower of majesty and power, tall and upright with a crown of bells beneath a tuft of leaves. A small salamander rests at his feet, and on his robe the salamanders bite their own tails, closed circles of completed intention. Notice that he leans slightly forward, as though about to rise: his authority is ready to move. The staff still sprouts, so his vision can keep growing. The picture asks what you are ready to lead, and how you will invite others into it.

The full reading

Upright

The King of Wands is Air of Fire, vision that has become strategy. Where the Knight charges and the Queen radiates, the King directs: he sees the larger picture, sets the course and inspires others to carry the plan forward. At work he describes the founder, director, teacher or entrepreneur who can turn an idea into an organisation, and who takes honest responsibility for the outcome. In love he points to a partner who is generous, loyal and forthright, or to your own capacity to lead a shared life with purpose. Inwardly he is the mature form of ambition: confident enough to decide and principled enough to be trusted. Waite calls him honest and conscientious. His gift is leadership that energises. His shadow, when overdone, is impatience with slower minds, a domineering streak, or expectations so high that others wear themselves out trying to meet them. The card asks you to name your vision clearly, hold it with integrity, and make room for others to share in it.

Reversed

Reversed, the King of Wands shows leadership energy that is blocked, forced or overextended. You may have a strong vision and lack the authority, resources or confidence to act on it, so frustration builds. Or the fire may have turned into control: decisions made alone, little patience for questions, and a temper that surfaces when things move too slowly. Sometimes ambition outruns planning, and the result is bold announcements without a workable path. Sometimes the energy has turned inward as harsh self-judgement, holding yourself to standards no one could meet. At work this can look like a leader who micromanages, or a founder stretched across too many initiatives. In relationships it may point to one partner setting the agenda without consultation. Waite’s reversal describes someone good yet severe, austere yet tolerant, which hints at the balance to recover. The way through is to recalibrate: clarify the true priority, share decisions, and lead through trust and example.
