Ivy · Greenaway 1884: "Fidelity. Marriage."
The story of the card

In the Garden card three generations gather in rich jewel glass beneath a gilded arch hung with ivy. An old man sits with two loyal dogs at his side, a couple talks near the gate, a child reaches toward the dogs, and ten pentacles glow across the estate wall in the pattern of a tree. A seasoned reader would point out how little the figures look at one another; the belonging here is quiet and assumed. The arch is a threshold between generations, the dogs are loyalty, the estate is what has been built to last. Ivy, Greenaway’s flower of fidelity, clings through every season. The picture asks what you are building that will outlast this moment.

The full reading

Upright

The Ten of Pentacles is the Lord of Wealth, Mercury in Virgo: the fullness of Earth, where effort becomes structure and structure becomes inheritance of the widest kind. Its wealth includes skills passed down, family stories, traditions, a trusted community, a home that holds people together, and values that outlive any one person. In work it can describe an established organisation, a family enterprise, a long career, or a project designed to endure. In love it speaks of commitment that thinks in decades and of weaving two lives into a wider network of family and friends. In your inner life it invites you to consider your roots and what you want to hand on. Its gift is continuity and belonging. Its shadow, when overdone, is rigidity, the weight of expectation, or valuing status and tradition above the people inside them. The card asks you to build patiently for the long term and to tend the roots that hold you.

Reversed

Reversed, the estate shows its cracks. Family or group expectations may feel heavy, old patterns may be repeating, or the structure you rely on may seem less stable than it looked. Sometimes the energy is blocked by short-term thinking, where urgent pressures crowd out long-term plans. Sometimes it is internalised as a question of belonging: whether you fit the tradition you came from, or whether you want to carry it forward at all. Disagreements about shared resources, responsibilities or values can surface here; they deserve calm, fair conversation, with qualified advice where practical matters are involved. In work this can show as instability in an established setting; in love, as differing views of the future. The way through is conscious authorship. Keep the roots that nourish you, respectfully set down the patterns that harm, and remember that legacy can be chosen as well as inherited. A chosen family and a newly planted tradition are also lasting wealth.
