What you have set in motion is starting to grow. Keep your eyes on the horizon and prepare for the next stage of expansion.

Love A relationship may be ready to widen: shared plans, travel or a bigger future together.

Hollyhock · Greenaway 1884: "Ambition. Fecundity."
The story of the card

A figure stands on an amber cliff with his back to you, one hand resting on the first of three planted staffs. Beside them rise tall hollyhock spires, which the Victorians read as ambition and abundance, flowers that climb higher every week of summer. Below, tiny ships of blue and gold glass cross a luminous sea. Those ships were launched earlier, and now his task is to watch the horizon for news. The staffs are planted in the ground, so the foundations hold. Because we see only his back, we share his view and his waiting. The picture asks you to lift your eyes from the work already launched and look further.

The full reading

Upright

The Three of Wands marks the moment when a plan leaves your hands and begins to meet the world. Seeds have been sown, messages sent, proposals delivered, and the early signs are encouraging. The Sun in Aries brings optimism and a sense of confident growth. At work it often points to expansion: new markets, collaboration at a distance, a role with wider reach, or the first real feedback on something you launched. In love it can describe a relationship widening its horizons together, or a connection across distance. Inwardly it is the enlarged perspective that comes when you stop staring at the next task and see the whole coastline. Its gift is foresight, the ability to anticipate the next stage while this one is still unfolding. Its shadow is impatience with the time that ventures need to travel, or a habit of looking so far ahead that present details are neglected. The card asks you to keep faith with what you launched and prepare for what may come back.

Reversed

Reversed, the Three of Wands shows ships that seem slow to return. You launched something and the replies, results or recognition have not arrived at the pace you hoped, which can breed frustration or a quiet shrinking of your ambitions. Sometimes the block is external: delays, logistics, other people’s timelines. Sometimes it is internal, a vision that stayed too small because you did not quite believe it could travel. At work this may appear as a stalled expansion, a partner who goes quiet, or plans that were never fully resourced. In relationships it can mean a long-distance connection strained by waiting, or a shared future discussed and never built. The reversal invites a review. Check what was actually sent out, what is still in transit and what needs a second message. Adjust the plan where the facts require it, and widen your view again once you have steadied the foundations under your feet.

In a reading
In the past
You launched something with foresight and confidence, and the ventures sent out then are the reason this moment exists.Reversed Earlier plans met delays or were kept smaller than they needed to be, and you are still recalibrating your expectations.
In the present
Your efforts are in motion and the early signs are good; this is a time to watch, anticipate and prepare for growth.Reversed Results are slower than hoped, and frustration may tempt you to shrink the plan before it has had time to travel.
Looking ahead

As the people around you
