The Century Old Bowling Alley Hidden Behind Scholz Garten

Beneath the live oaks of downtown Austin sits a beloved beer garden with a hundred-year-old secret waiting in the back hall.

Right in the heart of downtown Austin at 1607 San Jacinto Blvd, Scholz Garten holds a sweet piece of Texas culture that most folks walk right past. Behind the historic beer garden sits a working, century-old six-lane bowling alley built by a German singing society in 1908.

Hey there, sweet friends. Pull up a chair next to the smoker and pour yourself a tall glass of iced sweet tea. Whenever I leave the quiet pine trees and caliche roads of Bastrop to head into downtown Austin for a game day, my heart starts beating a little faster. As a lifelong Texas Longhorns fan and a proud Southern hippie, I love any place where folks can gather under the shade trees, share a meal, and let the stresses of the world melt away. Right down at 1607 San Jacinto Blvd sits a gathering place that has been doing just that for generations. Most folks know Scholz Garten for the cold drinks and the sea of burnt orange on autumn Saturdays, yet tucked right behind that beer garden is one of the neatest secrets in town.

A Sanctuary Built on Song and Fellowship

To really appreciate the magic of this spot, we have to look back at how it all began. A German immigrant named August Scholz founded the place in 1866, just one year after the Civil War ended. Folks had been through terrible storms of life, and they needed a peaceful spot to sit together and heal. Because of that enduring spirit of fellowship, Scholz Garten is considered the oldest continuously operating business in Texas. That kind of staying power comes from true Southern hospitality, the kind where every neighbor has a seat at the table.

The history gets even sweeter when the music comes in. A German singing society called the Austin Saengerrunde loved gathering there to lift their voices in harmony. That same group is still active today, keeping their traditions alive. Back in 1908, the Austin Saengerrunde added a hall right behind the beer garden. Then in 1914, they bought the property outright, and they still own it over a century later. Knowing that a community built on song and friendship has cared for this land for over a hundred years makes my old flower child heart smile.

When the singing society built that hall behind the beer garden in 1908, they tucked a wonderful surprise inside. They built a six-lane bowling alley right into the hall. Even after all these decades, those six lanes are still in use today, making it one of the oldest continuously operating bowling alleys in the United States. While the crowd outside is throwing up the Hook 'Em sign and cheering under the trees, a whole century of quiet fun is resting right behind the walls.

Just think about the generations of friends who have laced up their shoes and laughed together in that back room. Good places and good people always find a way to weather the tough seasons. Scholz Garten even survived closing for over a decade during Prohibition and reopened right after, ready to welcome the tribe back home. That resilience was honored when the property was named a Texas Historic Landmark in 1967 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Later on, the buildings were lovingly restored in 1986 and 1987 so future generations could enjoy the same warm embrace.

Rolling Through the Years Together

In my own life, whether I am tending the pit on my front porch or cheering with my people, I believe in peace and love and reciprocity. When you pour kindness and care into a community space, that goodness comes back to you tenfold. Scholz Garten and the Austin Saengerrunde have been pouring out hospitality since 1866, giving Texas culture a home where history breathes easy.

Next time you find yourself strolling down San Jacinto Boulevard with the sun shining on your tie-dye, take a moment to appreciate the deep roots beneath your feet. Tell me, y'all, did you know about the hidden bowling alley behind Scholz Garten, or have you ever rolled a game on those old wooden lanes? Hook 'Em forever, y'all. #ScholzGarten #AustinHistory #OldestInTexas #DowntownAustin #AustinUnlocked
